STARHILL FOREST IDENTIFIES AND HELPS PRESERVE
ANCIENT AND HISTORIC TREES

Starhill Forest Arboretum
identifies ancient and historic trees around our county, raises funds to preserve them with structural pruning, dynamic and static cabling, lightning protection, and other measures, and works through our Trails and Greenways organization to have them monumented.

Besides the Gudgel Oak, seen elsewhere on this web site, and the Illinois Champion Dwarf Hackberry growing here at Starhill Forest and seen on our home page, we have worked with more than a dozen other trees.

The Ann Rutledge Tuliptree is one example.
It shades the grave of Abraham Lincoln's first love.

The great tree predates the cemetery, platted in 1879, and is a magnificent landmark specimen. We had lightning protection, dynamic cabling, and pruning done on this tree with help from nearly fifty donors.

The Illinois Champion Northern Catalpa, just down the road from our house, was in need of static cabling to stabilize a weak fork. We held a tree workshop at Starhill Forest and used donations from the participants to help the tree's owner pay for the work. Several other special trees have received minor pruning, mulching, and plaques through this program.
