The
Athens Trail-Marker White Oak (Quercus alba), core-dated to
the 1730s, probably was bent into this form by native Americans to point
the way to a natural ford of the Sangamon River -- it lives on despite
the subsequent construction of a bridge, just down the road from Starhill
Forest. Our friend Sue Wydick is perched on the trunk at center for
scale.
